Anne Lanyon attended the Conference “Rediscovering the Spiritual in God’s Creation” in Adelaide. There was a diverse range of presentations by people from many different Christian perspectives which was emphasised by the image Ernst Conradie used of “emerging horizons”. We are in exciting and hope-filled times.

We are creating awareness of war and militarism as an environmental issue. The Worldwatch Institute states that “the ecological consequences of war often remain written in the landscape for many years”. The SBS documentary “Footprints of War” investigates this concept and sheds light on the devastating impacts that war has on natural environments around the world. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJFeoHf95aY) Imprints of war on the land can serve as reminders of how human actions have the power to create enduring social and ecological impacts. They may prompt us to reflect and pray for peace and justice in times of remembrance.
Brian Vale attended the rally against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) rally, a campaign supported by Columbans globally. The (TPP) agenda being negotiated between Australia, the US and 10 other Pacific Rim Countries means higher medicine prices, less internet freedom and allowing foreign companies to sue governments over health, environment and workers’ rights. www.aftinet.org.au
Anne Lanyon participated in the Walk 4 Water by walking on two days of the week long walk to highlight the need to protect Sydney’s water catchment from coal and coal seam gas mining.
Hannah Cifuentes and Anne Lanyon attended the Nature Conservation Council’s Environment Forum at NSW Parliament House. The audience sent in questions that were then collated and asked of the political leaders. We asked the question: “ Given that Australia has the highest mammal extinction rate in the world, how can you defend the recommendations of the Biodiversity Legislation Review Panel to accelerate the implementation of biodiversity offsetting this demonstrate the emphasis on development over protection of the natural world?”
