A priest, prophet, and faithful servant of the people of God

A Priest, Prophet, and Faithful Servant - Fr Noel Connolly SSC

With great love and respect, we remember Columban Fr. Noel Connolly, a faithful servant of God who spent his life serving others, embodying the core values of compassion, intellect, and selfless dedication. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of those he served and inspired, both within the Columban community and the wider Church in Australia and beyond.

Born in 1945 in Queensland, Australia, Fr. Noel entered the Missionary Society of St. Columban and was ordained a priest in 1969. His journey as a missionary took him far from home, beginning with his assignment to South Korea. These early years in Korea were formative for Fr. Noel, where he immersed himself deeply in the culture and language, always prioritising the needs and struggles of the people. His work in Korea left an indelible mark on his understanding of mission, a mission that was incarnational, rooted in solidarity, and firmly centred on listening to and serving the most marginalised.

Through his years of service, Fr. Noel became known for his quiet wisdom and deep theological insights. He was always driven by the belief that the mission was about presence - being fully present to others and their needs. He often spoke of the importance of “walking with” those he served rather than simply “doing for them.”

After his time in South Korea, Fr. Noel went to Rome to study moral theology. Returning to Australia, he took on essential roles within the Columban Society. He served as a seminary rector and lecturer, becoming a key figure in shaping the future of Columban missionaries. His academic work and theological scholarship were grounded in pastoral concern, making his teachings relatable to a wide audience, from seminary students, priests and religious sisters to everyday parishioners.

Fr. Noel was also an active author and commentator on ecclesiastical matters, regularly writing on the Church's challenges and opportunities. His writings focused on creating a Church that was inclusive, open to dialogue, and attuned to the world's needs. In his work, Fr. Noel emphasized the importance of engaging with the modern world while remaining faithful to the core principles of the Gospel.

His pastoral care extended beyond formal teaching. He was known for his gentle listening and ability to offer advice and spiritual guidance when needed. As a mentor to priests and laypeople alike, Fr. Noel had an uncanny ability to help others find their voices in the faith.

Fr. Noel was a champion of synodality, the call for a more inclusive and participatory Church. His involvement in the Plenary Council of the Catholic Church in Australia was one of the many ways he advocated for a Church that listens. Fr. Noel was a strong proponent of the Church being more open to the insights and contributions of the laity. He believed the Church’s structures needed to reflect the values of co-responsibility and shared leadership.

As a member of the Facilitation Team for the Plenary Council, Fr. Noel played a pivotal role in shaping the discussions around the Church's future direction in Australia. He encouraged a Church that was both prophetic and pastoral, one that embraced the complexities of modern life while remaining steadfast in its commitment to justice, peace, ecology, and the dignity of every human person.

In his written reflections, Fr. Noel often discussed the need for Church reform, urging the faithful to reclaim the radical inclusivity of the Gospel. His writings called for a more missionary Church, one that did not shy away from difficult truths but also responded to the needs of society's most vulnerable. He was particularly concerned with the plight of the poor, migrants, and refugees, calling the Church to be a voice for the voiceless.

What set Fr. Noel apart was his theological insight, academic achievements, and personal commitment to people. Whether engaging with a fellow priest, a seminarian, or a layperson, Fr. Noel could make people feel heard, valued, and respected. His genuine care for others was felt in every interaction, and his presence was always a source of comfort and encouragement.

Fr. Noel also had a deep love for spirituality and prayer. A steady rhythm of prayer, reflection, and action marked his life. He was a man of deep prayer, and this spirituality grounded his ministry and guided him throughout his life. His prayer was never separated from his mission; for Fr. Noel, to pray was to act in the world, and to act was to pray.

Fr. Noel Connolly’s death is a significant loss to the Columban community and the Church. Yet, his legacy endures in the lives he touched and the work he left behind. He challenged us to be a Church that listens, engages with the world with humility, and works tirelessly to serve the poor and the marginalised, and to care for the Earth, our common home.

In remembering Fr. Noel, we honour a man who lived out the Gospel in every aspect of his life, a man who invited us all to walk the path of discipleship with courage and faith. His legacy will continue to inspire us to build a Church that is more inclusive, more compassionate, and more committed to justice.

May Fr. Noel rest in peace, knowing that his work has made a lasting impact. May we, inspired by his example, continue to live out his vision of a missionary, listening, synodal and loving Church.
