reject the overtures of the USA embassy in Rome to gain Vatican support
for the production of Genetically Engineered food. A sample letter
outlining the problem asked Church and secular bodies to write of their
objections to the Apostolic Delegate in Australia and the Pontifical

- Iraq Patenting Laws - A campaign was initiated to lobby the Australian
government to help the Iraq government to rescind USA style patenting
laws imposed under Bremer. The rationale was that laws disadvantaged
poor farmers, and Australia had been at least complicit in their

- In 2002 the Australian Conference of Catholic Bishops established
Catholic Earthcare Australia (CEA) Beginning with the teaching of
Father Sean McDonagh at the Columban Mission Institute, Sydney, from
the mid 1970s Columbans raised the then peripheral issue of ecology and
justice. After the New Year Letter of Pope John Paul II in 1990 stating
that care for the environment was integral to Catholic belief.
